Greetings, Shulgin Community,
It has been a true pleasure to meet so many of you over the past two months, and to discover old friends and colleagues already here. Thank you for the warm welcome to the Shulgin Foundation.
In the early 2000s, while studying at San Francisco State, I picked up a used copy of PIHKAL in a small bookshop in the Inner Sunset. I couldn’t have known how influential it would become. The “fictitious” adventures of “Alice” and “Shura” introduced me to the idea of experience-as-experiment, and inspired me to begin questioning everything. Those early explorations—wandering Golden Gate Park, discovering the ocean cliffs, immersing in Burning Man’s creative world, and studying psychedelics deeply—ignited a lifelong examination of myself, the world around me, and my own unconscious biases. Psychedelic work has shaped my growth as a mother, partner, and leader, guiding a career in transformative education, event production, business development, and psychedelically-informed coaching.
As I’ve come to know the Shulgin Farm and its community, I’ve been struck by the unique role it plays: a thoughtful and often hidden epicenter of scientific exploration; a welcoming physical home for the psychedelic movement; a gathering place where policymakers, chemists, psychonauts, educators, and newcomers learn side by side. Just as people once gathered here with Sasha and Ann, we gather again to preserve the land, share its history, and inspire future leaders.
Looking ahead, I see the Foundation as a vibrant global hub: one that conserves and activates the historic Farm, expands access to Sasha and Ann’s archives, and offers educational resources that support scientific, therapeutic, and spiritual inquiry. Our vision is a connected, informed, and empowered community that carries the Shulgin legacy forward.
As we near the end of the year, I also want to share our need for support. We are fundraising to conserve and restore the property, design the next decade of our programming, and expand access to the Shulgins’ legacy through archival and educational projects. As you consider your end-of-year giving, please support the Foundation and help us continue this work.
With gratitude and excitement for the future,
Megan J. Bowers, ACC
